Jet Crash Lands in Hudson River

Today a American Airlines jet took off from Laguardia Airport with Charlotte, NC as its destination and ex pierced a problem (a flock of geese were sucked into the turbines) 3 minutes into the flight which caused the pilot to crash into the Hudson River at around 50th Street. 150 passengers and 5 crew members were all safely evacuated after several hours of harrowing rescue attempts by the brave members of the NYPD, FDNY, and Coast Guard, and the Circle Line Ferries. Mad props given to the pilot - who knew he lacked altitude to turn around- but he brought it down for a relatively controlled descent without any loss of life.

In other news, some dude that I swore could have been Jeremy Piven was on that plane. False alarm.

Thousands Attend Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting

An eight-ton, 72-foot Norway spruce lit up with sparkling holiday colors as thousands of onlookers packed into the streets surrounding the center's plaza, with its famed skating rink and gilded statue depicting Prometheus bringing fire to mankind.

Tony Bennett, Harry Connick Jr., Jamie Foxx and Beyonce were among the entertainers who performed for television audiences and the crowd surrounding the midtown Manhattan complex.
This year's tree is decorated with 30,000 energy-efficient LED lights on 5 miles of wire, topped with a massive crystal star.

While the first official lighting was in 1933, the first Rockefeller Center Christmas tree was put up two years earlier during the Depression by workers building the Art Deco complex.
In past years, the tree has been recycled after the holiday season in a variety of ways, including making toys for animals at the Bronx Zoo and being mulched for hiking trails.

Intrepid Returns to NY

After two years of repairs, and a fresh coat of paint, the USS Intrepid is returning to Pier 86 in the Hudson River Park.

The 65 year old vessel was towed from Staten Island by a team of four tugboats, accompanied by a flotilla of police boats and sightseeing craft.

Accompanied by more than 200 former crewmembers, some of whom were much older than the ship itself.

The overhaul cost more than $100 million but most came from city grants.
